washday

my mother’s tattered rag —

the one that came wrapped around

her jam jar of ashes — hangs

as clean as it can get — still and dry

on my chipping white rack.

there is no more room for sorrow,

to hang above or beside her:

at last, our final washday is done.

. . . . .
