Women of Gee’s Bend
create masterpiece quilts
and work in the fields.

Enlivened by imagination,
they extend beyond expressive
boundaries of African-American

art. In leagues by themselves
–results of geographical
isolation, cultural continuities

–three, sometimes four
generations of women
in the same family – carry on

lively visual conversations
among lineages. Gee’s Bend art
quilts stand for flair – bold,

improvisational geometries
made up of old,  recycled
remnants of fabrics –

of lives lived with skill.
