1825 | Wood

Julia Amanda Sargent Wood (13 Apr 1825 – 09 Mar 1903 | New London NH – St Cloud MN) poet, author, novelist, newspaper editor, pen name: Minnie Mary Lee.

The mountains! How different! I love our own mountains, their sunny slopes and vales.

On the right are full-length images of the Blessed Virgin, as she may have appeared

journeying over the mountains. In some parts, there are rocky mountains where we

suffer with cold. I am sure you will have ample protection through all those mountain

passes. The eagle’s wings no longer trailed in the dust, but flew over mountain and

plain, over cabin and spire. Simplicities, grandeurs, sublimities — of dell or plain or

mountain. The long journey of many weeks, through tunnels and across rivers, over

mountain and vale by railroad, then by stage-coach, or on the backs of burros over

desolate plains, or winding around mountains  – whose lofty tops glistened with snow.
