1818 | Ellet

Elizabeth Fries Lummis Ellet (18 Oct 1818 – 03 Jul 1877 | Sodus Point NY – New York NY) poet, author, editor, historian, translator, first to record lives of American Revolutionary women.

Poetry had her fair votaries, names celebrated by praise of a classic poetess. Woman gradually

rose above the condition of slavery, and began to preside over the elements that formed the

poetry of life. There was the first poetess of Germany, Ava. In poetry and painting the period

was memorable and glorious. Passion, too often carried to excess, represented what might be

termed the poetry of the repulsive. The nun, landscape-painter and poetess, obtained time for

her exercises in poetry and music. In narrative poetry, she acquired a reputation. A few years

later, her taste for poetry and learning languages developed itself. Her ‘Apology for the Female

Sex’ and other works followed this. Female authors wrote after the established fashion, while

they entered on a wider field, partook of the new spirit breathed into poetry. One recited

poems of female genius, a learned poetess & her hundredth birthday: wreaths of poetry.
