For Southern Women

Time was the voice of poets, she declared,
coming to rest in the shapes and sounds

of wildwood flowers, hidden in the late
mowing of a harvest’s movable nest.

Girls in the midst caught glimpses
of blackened shawls descending,

of poets cooking with light.
