There is a Dharavi child
who sits near the top
of a wooden ladder
leaning against a shack
in the midst of day.
He or she looks straight out
at us — distant viewers.
The face blurs in details
but we feel the child’s eyes
keen upon us, eliciting
deeper awarenesses
of him or of her —
wherever we may be.
