Rural, Modest, and Refined
Educated early at Thetford Academy, Miss Slade
ranked among the foremost in ordinary studies –
in Greek, Latin, mathematics — which she pursued
far into Boston, continuing studies in music, French,
and polite literature not easily acquired in rural places.
Miss Slade married. After marriage, Mrs. Currier
continued literary and scientific pursuits, keeping up
with the age of modern research. Never given to public
productions, Currier’s critical tastes still warrant success.
She did not seek distinction. She believed the woman
to be the home, the best energies of life. By watchfulness,
Hannah Slade Currier also collected many objects of art
–throwing a mantle of joy and gladness around living–
and dying one of the wealthiest women in the State.
